The unfortunate ant incident and other weekend occurrences.

So for those you who know me, you know I am not really an outdoors-y type person and therefore, not much of a plant person. However, I am currently in the possession of 4 3 plants belonging to Corner’s coworker Leah. On Friday night, I was minding my own business in the kitchen, heating up some pita bread to enjoy with my tomato basil hummus when it occurred to me that I should probably water Leah’s plants. I was making my rounds with the plants, and after dumping most of the contents of my water cup on one of Nigel’s beds (oops!) I arrived at the last plant (a small orchid on the windowsill) to find it absolutely covered in ants.

I don’t mean a few ants, I mean the whole plant + planter appeared to be moving slightly.

I couldn’t decide whether I wanted to cry, vomit, or pass out, so I called Corner on the phone and was like WTF SHOULD I DO? CAN LEAH’S PLANT TAKE ONE FOR THE TEAM OR IS IT AN IMPORTANT PLANT? He suggested sticking the plant in the sink and drowning the ants, but there was NO WAY I was touching that thing in order to move it from the windowsill to the kitchen sink. I totally had the heebie-jeebies and was envisioning several worst case scenarios, one of which involved the ants invading my dreadlocks and being stuck there forever….I’m still itchy just thinking about it!

I had the genius idea to try to vacuum up the ants. Brilliant, right? Until I knocked over the plant with the vacuum hose and the ants spilled out ALL OVER the kitchen floor. Luckily Nigel saw no need to investigate because I was near hysterics at this point and the last thing I needed was my dog sniffing around a bunch of bugs and potting soil while I finally gave in and liberally applied Raid to everything in the near vicinity and swept the entire plant and all of the offending ants straight into the garbage can. Now I owe Leah a new plant, but GOOD GOD that was a lot of ants!

And yes, it is possible to get this worked up over ants when your boyfriend is gone for 5 weeks, both of your cars broke the day he left, your dog was running a temperature at the vet earlier on in the day and you were told to keep an eye on him and all you can think about is if the dog is sick then you can’t go to your conference in Texas later on in the week, etc. So don’t judge me.

On the plus side, Megan, Veronica, and Emma came down for the weekend and we had an enjoyable time. Dinner at the Crown & Anchor, rum shrubs, Band Hero, breakfast at Trailside Cafe, Carmel Beach, and a Michigan State victory over Michigan. MSU has not lost to UofM in football or basketball in 855 days. It feels good.
